Welcome to Beginning Italic Calligraphy

Get your start quickly and easily.
Get that important basic training that will let you fly!

Hi! I'm Suzanne and I'm a calligrapher, bookbinder and designer in the craft industry. I've worked and taught lettering and bookbinding to many students in many guilds over my checkered history!

It's such a joy to me (and the student!) when they have that aha! moment. I'm here to help you get to that aha! moment.

After years of teaching in person, this seemed like a good time to get my knowledge and experience somewhere that you have lifetime access!

You can find me at www.quietfiredesign.ca

This class is beginner friendly - yet perfect for the calligrapher who wants a letterform tune-up!

Have you ever said "I tried calligraphy once and I can't draw a straight line"?

Calligraphy is simply paper + pen + ink.   But it is so much more!

You may have already tried calligraphy and found how many things can go wrong when you're starting out. I've taken all the frustration out of the tools you'll work with, so you can concentrate completely on making beautiful letters.

What to Expect

  • You'll use easy-to-get tools for practice. We'll save the fancy ones for a follow-up class!
  • The course is broken down into simple lessons that make perfect sense.
  • You have lifetime access to the course so you can return for a tune-up at any time. It will be easy to pop back into the right spot when you return for a review.
  • You'll learn the basic minuscule forms (that's the lower case letters) and the majuscules (those are the capital letters).
  • You'll learn spacing, punctuation and numbers - why are those numbers so awkward?
  • You'll gain loads of information, tips and techniques in short digestible lessons. Over 5 hours of instruction - and did I mention the lifetime access?

Supplies

I've chosen simple tools that I know work well. I want you to have the best start possible without fussing over tools that might sabotage your first attemps! We'll look at those supplies carefully so you know why I've chosen them.

Handouts

I've made easy-to-follow handouts perfect for your practice time. In fact, there are 20 pages of handouts for you to download and print! You'll use them over and over again. And if you spill coffee on them, simply reprint them!

What You'll Cover

You'll learn the basic minuscules (the lower case letters) and majuscules (the capital letters),   punctuation, numbers and spacing - so why are those numbers so awkward?

The lessons are short and digestible.I've even added breaks so you can pause the video and practice what I've just taught.

Learn the Letterforms!

Before you can do the "fancy stuff" it's super important to learn the basics. All the practice and discipline will pay off later!

Learn the Mantras!

You'll hear my instructions repeated many times so that when you come to putting pen to paper, you will have the mantra ingrained for each letter!

Access

You have lifetime access to the course so you can watch the whole class once, then return for a tune-up at any time. It will be easy to pop right in to the spot where you need a refresher.

What Students have said...

"I can't wait to refer new calligraphers to you so they can buy the class - I thought the course was spot on! You presented it all so thoughtfully in a calming manner (but managed to sneak some of your loveable humour in too!).
I think the way you've broken it out into segments makes so much sense as we often don't have time to sit down for 3 hours but if we can chew off half an hour at a time (and maybe sneak a little review in each time!), it's so much more doable.
We often don't have enough newbies at a time that it makes sense to run a class so this will be an invaluable resource to us as a Guild!" - Karen W.
